ACT-SO is a major youth initiative of the NAACP.The acronym stands for: Afro-Academic,
Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics.
What Is ACT-SO? ACT-SO is a yearlong enrichment program
designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among
African-American high school students. The program relies on the dedication and commitment of
community and business leaders who volunteer as mentors and coaches to promote academic and artistic
excellence. Through this collaborative effort, participating students develop the confidence and skills
needed to excel in school and in life.Annually, ACT-SO students can compete in up to 26 categories
including the sciences, humanities, business, and performing visual arts at scheduled events
coordinated by the local branch. Gold medalists at the local levels qualify for the national
competition held at the annual convention each summer. For more information about how to get involved
with ACT-SO with NAACP Austin, please contact our ACT-SO coordinator Ms. Polly Street
